Hex bolts are the most commonly used bolt type. The hex-shaped head of these bolts is seen in all types of mechanical assemblies, and yet some confusion remains as to the proper way to measure a bolt. The five factors that must be known to determine the proper replacement for a heave hex bolt are length, shank length, diameter, threads per inch and grade.
Instructions
1.Place the zero end of the measuring scale against the bottom of the hex head, and read the scale to determine the total length of the bolt. Bolt length increases in 1/4-inch increments. Remember to use a metric scale when measuring metric hex nut.
2.Measure the unthreaded portion of the bolt. This is the shank length and must be the same on the replacement bolt to insure the proper tensile rating is maintained.
3.Measure across the threaded end of the bolt to determine bolt diameter. The smallest bolt is 1/4 inch in diameter. Hex bolts diameters increase in 1/16 inch increments.
4.Using a thread gauge, determine the threads per inch. If a thread gauge is not available, count the threads in the first inch of the hex bolt. You must use a thread gauge when measuring metric bolts.
5.Note any markings on the bolt head. These are the symbols denoting the hardness grade of the bolt. Replace the bolt with one that has the same markings.

How to Draw a Hex Nut
Hex nut are small threaded metallic blocks used to secure bolts. The nut and bolt together bind machine parts for assembly in piecemeal fashion. The term "hex" in "hex nut" refers to "hexagon," a six-sided polygon. The sides of a hex nut enable pliers and wrenches to grip the nut and apply torque (rotational force) to it.
Instructions
1.Set your compass to a radius of at least two inches. Then, lightly draw a circle somewhere near the top of your page. The circle is a guide curve used to locate the points of the nut's hexagonal outline. It's not part of the nut itself.
2.Position your compass' sharp point on any point on the circle's circumference. Then, sweep the compass' pencil across the circumference to make a small arc that intersects it.
3.Position your compass' sharp point at the intersection you just made. Then, repeat Step 2 to form another arc.
4.Do Step 3 repeatedly to make a total of six arcs that intersect with the circle's circumference.
5.Form the nut's outline: Draw line segments connecting each adjacent pair of intersections from Steps 3 and 4. The result will be a hexagon.
6.Make the nut's hole: Decrease the radius of your compass by half. Then, draw another circle whose center is the same as the first circle you drew. This step completes the top view of the nut.
7.Make guidelines for the Heavy Hex Nut's side view: Draw two vertical lines that extend down from the leftmost and rightmost points of the nut's top view, to the paper's bottom edge. Also, draw a very light line connecting these two extreme left and right points in the top view.
8.Make guidelines for the nut's facets: For each of the nut's top view points that lie below the last guideline from Step 7, draw a vertical line from the point down to the paper's bottom edge.
9.Make the side view of the hex hex bolt : Draw a rectangle a few inches below the nut's top view. Ensure the rectangle has these characteristics:
Its top and bottom edges extend from the leftmost to the rightmost guidelines you drew in step 7.
Its height is one-third its length.
10.Complete the nut by drawing its facets: For each facet guideline from Step 8, darken the portion of the guideline that falls within Step 9's rectangle.

How to Remove a Stripped Hex Nut?
Just because heavy hex bolt are made out of metal doesn't mean they can't get damaged. A nut can be "stripped" when the hard side corners become sheared off or smoothed down so that a wrench or socket can no longer properly grip the nut. When this happens, a few simple solutions might help you remove that stripped hex nut from the bolt it's attached to.
Spray some penetrating lubricant onto the screws of whatever the nut is attached to, then let it sit for a few minutes. This will allow the lubricant to work its way under the nut threads and will help loosen it.
Adjust the tightness of your vise grips so that when you close the jaws around the hex nut, it is extremely tight. Ensure the grip is tight enough that it will not slip off when you attempt to loosen the nut.
Close the jaws of the vise grips around the fastener and twist the nut clockwise just a bit. This will help break the nut free and make it easier to loosen than if you had just attempted to loosen it first.
Twist the nut counterclockwise with your vise grips until it comes free.

How to Make a Ring From a Hex Nut?
Jewelry does not require expensive metals or gemstones to create an unusual, eye-catching accessory. You can find many inexpensive yet alluring materials to use as components in your jewelry-making at your local hardware store. It is easy to fashion a hex nut into a ring using only a file and sandpaper.
Measure your finger or the finger of the person who will wear the hex nut ring. You can measure ring size using a standard finger gauge or you can take a ring that fits and slide it onto a ring mandrel to determine the ring size needed for your project.
Select a hex bolt with a larger outer rim and a slightly smaller inner rim than the ring size you need.
File away the threads on the inside of the hex nut using the file. Continue to file until the inside of the hex nut is smooth and the size needed for your ring.
Check the hex nut as you work by sliding the heavy hex nut on a ring mandrel. Take care not to file too much or the ring will be too big. It is easy to enlarge a ring, but if you make the hex nut ring too large, you will need to start filing over again with a new hex nut.
Use (220 grit) wet/dry sandpaper to sand the inside of the hex nut so that the inside of the ring is quite smooth. Switch to 400, 600 and 800 sandpaper as you work until you create a high polish.
Test the hex nut ring for comfort. Slide the hex nut ring onto the finger of the person who will wear the ring. Make any needed adjustments.
