How to Paint Rubber Balls

You can paint a rubber ball to change its color and leave it with a shiny new exterior. Rubber balls are available in a wide variety of sizes to accommodate all kinds of active play. It may be difficult to find a ball in both the size and color scheme you are looking for. A few layers of paint and a little patience takes the rubber sphere from just another bouncing ball to a personalized toy craft.
Instructions
1.Soak the corner of a cloth in isotropy alcohol and thoroughly wipe down the surface of the rubber ball.
2.Position a pedestal in the center of your painting area (don't forget to cover the floor with some newspaper). The pedestal can be a toilet paper tube for larger balls and an empty pen tube for smaller rubber balls. Place the ball on the pedestal.
3.Apply rubber primer to the topside of the ball. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before turning the ball upside down and covering the other side with primer. Let it dry.
4.Apply a thin coat of the latex paint by holding the can at least 8 inches from the surface of the bounce ball at all times. Turn the ball over on the pedestal and paint the other side once the first half has dried completely. Continue spinning the ball around in the pedestal and adding thin layers of paint until you are satisfied with the color.

How to Make a Bouncy Ball

The bouncy ball is a timeless toy. They are super cheap, and can provide hours of entertainment for the whole family. In fact, take a bouncy ball down in the basement and watch parents and children chase it around for hours. You don't have to be a child to enjoy a good bouncy ball. Did you know you can easily make your own bouncy ball? In fact, it is actually quite simple and a fun activity to do with kids. This article explains how you and your kids can make your own bouncy balls for little cost in little time. Remember that these are choking hazards for small children.
Instructions
1.Place the water in a bowl. Dump the alcohol into the bowl with the water glass and immediately begin stirring. You want the alcohol to combine with all of the water glass. This combination will cause a chemical reaction to occur.
2.Stir quickly with the Popsicle stick until the substance turns into a whitish solid. This should only take a couple of minutes for the chemical reaction to take place. Just keep stirring until the entire substance has transformed into a solid.
3.Put on the rubber gloves and pick up the solid substance. You want to protect your skin because the material will still be soft and wet and could cause irritation. At this point, there will be no definite shape to the ball. It will just feel like a messy blob. Ball definition comes with the next step. Keep the children back from the mess.
4.Roll and squeeze into a ball until the outside of the bouncy ball no longer breaks and crumbles. You may have to roll the ball between your two hands for 5 to 10 minutes or so. Eventually, it will resemble a real bouncy ball. Go ahead and try it out.
5.Squish the bouncing ball back together if it breaks after using. Most commercial bouncy balls don't typically break, but homemade bouncy balls can. Unlike regular bouncy balls, however, this bouncy ball can be repaired if it is broken for any reason. Simply squeeze and roll it back together.

How to Operate Ball Mills

If you wanted to break a stone down into sand, you might reach for a sledge hammer. But if you want to turn sand into fine dust, a ball mill would be the best tool for the job. A ball mill is specifically designed to break down a granular substance into a much finer substance by tumbling and grinding them with ceramic or metallic balls. Ball mills are used by painters, ceramicists and pyrotechnics experts to mix and refine pigments, clay compounds and explosives for fireworks.
Load your milling media into your milling chamber. Depending on your mill's capacity, and the material you wish to mill, you can add less or more media, but generally do not load the chamber more than two-thirds of the way full.
Add the granular material you wish to mill. Use extreme caution if milling explosive materials.
Screw the lid on to the top of your milling chamber or slip the cover on and affix the rubber retaining ring to secure the lid in place.
Milling Your Material
Turn the loaded chamber on its side and place it top of the two metal rails so that the chamber is running parallel to the rails and making contact with the rubber or plastic bushings.
Place the entire ball mill inside of a milling cabinet and place the cabinet outdoors, far away from buildings, cars, people, animals, direct sunlight and any explosive objects such as gas canisters, if you are milling explosive materials. Pack sand bags around the high pressure mill to form a barricade around and on top of the milling cabinet. This will protect from flying debris in the event of an explosion.
Plug the ball mill into an electrical outlet and turn on the milling machine's motor to begin rotating the chamber.
Allow the mill to run uninterrupted for several hours. The longer the mill is allowed to run, the finer the granular material will become. Occasionally, feel the motor to make sure that it is not overheating. If the motor feels hot to the touch, turn off the machine and allow it to cool down before resuming.
Removing Milled Material
Turn off the ball mill and unplug it from its power source. If you are milling explosive material, remove the sandbags and open the milling cabinet. Remove the milling chamber and place it on a flat surface.
Allow the dust to settle inside of the milling chamber before opening the container. Slowly unscrew the bounce ball chamber's cover or remove the rubber retention ring and slide the cover off.
Place your fine mesh screen over your plastic or glass container. Carefully pour the contents of the ball mill out onto the screen to sift the milling media from the milled substance.

How to Convert a SAG Mill to a Ball Mill

A ball mill and a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill are similar in that both are industrial machines for grinding up a substance unto uniform pieces. Both use a rotating drum with steel balls to break up substances as varied as metallic ores, concrete, oats, wheat flour and rock candy. SAG mills have a few extra features such as lifting plates and large rocks as well as the steel balls. SAG mills are also smaller than ball mill and usually used in the first step of the grinding process. Ball mills may do very fine grinding, using small steel balls.
Remove the lifting plates. SAG mills have lifting plates to move the steel balls and rocks higher up the drum before they fall, so they will fall with more impact. Removing these plates is important because it makes the grinding action more uniform. It also reduces the energy need to rotate the drum because the mill is no longer lifting anything up the side of the drum--product, steel balls and rocks are only lifted up as far as centrifugal force takes them before falling back down
Remove the large rocks. Bouncing ball do a more uniform job of grinding because all the steel balls are the same size and do not fall from a great height. Ball mills control the fineness of the grinding process by changing out the gate valve size. Another granularity controlling device is the screen on the exit size of the mill. If the converted SAG mill is to be the only ball mill, the ball size and screen size might have to be changed several times --- unless the grinding is simple enough to do in one step.
Install a mill lining system. There are several commercially available systems to line the inside of a metal mill with hard synthetic plates. This makes the grinding smoother and has the very desirable side effect of reducing the noise that the ball mill makes while running. Most of the grinding is accomplished between product and balls --- not by collisions with the side of the drum --- so the lining does not slow down the grinding process.
